Understanding Revelation in Its First-Century World

Begin with the people who first heard the book, the imagery they knew, and the pressures they faced. The studies below present RAF’s arguments; read their evidence before weighing the conclusions.

Original audience: Begin with Revelation 1–3 and the seven churches. Ask what each community is being told to hear, resist, or do.

Apocalyptic literature and Old Testament imagery: Read the visions alongside the scriptural images they evoke. Notice beasts, worship, temple, judgment, and new creation before assigning modern identities to them.

First-century context: Ask how Rome, imperial worship, and Jerusalem enter the argument. Distinguish the text’s wording from a proposed historical identification.

“Soon” and “near”: Read Revelation 1:1–3 and 22:6–10 together. Ask how RAF’s reading accounts for this temporal language, and how it relates to the book’s final hope.

The dating question: RAF’s monograph discusses Nero-era and Domitian-era settings. Legitimate scholarly disagreement remains; the date should be examined as part of the evidence rather than treated as settled.
